After his second year at the medical faculty in Tomsk, he moved to Moscow, where from 1911 to 1917 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin (1861?1939), Sergey Malyutin (1859?1937) and Nikolay Kasatkin (1859?1930). His diploma work was the oil painting Beggars (1916?17).
